“Thanks a Million” DVD Release Confirmed

A couple of months back I reported that a Thanks a Million DVD was in the works. Looks like tomorrow is the big day, with the film getting its first official home “video” release as part of the Fox Cinema Archives. It is available though their website for $19.98, but Amazon looks like a better bet at $13.99.
Thanks a Million is not a personal favorite and Ann absolutely hated the movie, but any Ann is worthwhile Ann, so I’ve already pre-ordered this one.
It’s too bad that Ann disliked this movie as she received ample screen time, plus singing, dancing and a couple duets with Dick Powell. The screen play probably could have been much improved (MUCH improved). And a number of the cast members (Fred Allen as just one “for instanceâ€) detract from the already lame storyline. However, the addition of Paul Whiteman and his orchestra, along with some other entertainers, helped carry the movie. BUT!!! Ann really does well in this flick. Despite her not liking the “Sugar Plum†routine, I think it shows the real off screen Ann personality of the time. To show my sincere belief in this movie, I am also putting my money where my mouth is and did a pre-order from Amazon. While I have a fair version of the movie on my official “Ann Dvorak Computerâ€, there is no way I will pass up a chance to get a pristine copy. “Sugar Plum†and all!!!!!
I wonder what Ann’s reason was for not liking this movie. She’s so good in it….
I, too, like Ann Dvorak and feel she has not been credited for the talent and distinct personality she brought to the screen. However, I’m buying the dvd because Fred Allen and Patsy Kelly are in it. I think Fred Allen helps greatly to bring the implausible story to life by giving it the energy and tongue-in-cheek approach the film needed to be entertaining.
I love Patsy Kelly in general and she and Ann do a cute dance together in this one (which Ann hated). Otherwise it’s a very typical role for Miss D.
