My husband is out of town for New York Comic Con, so I figured I would get some late night Ann Dvorak viewing in. I wasn’t able to find my Scarface dvd, so I started poking around at the various streaming services we subscribe to. I didn’t find Scarface, but I was surprised to see Out of the Blue available from Amazon. It was released on VHS years ago, but has yet to see a DVD release. The quality of the print is so-so, and the film itself isn’t exactly a masterpiece. However, it’s one of the few purely comedic roles Ann ever played and she is delightful in it.
Now, back to trying to find that Scarface disc.
I agree Ann showed yet another side of her talent and made me wish she had done more comedy.
This was on UK television a few years ago . Wish I had kept it.
This was released on VHS years ago, but I have no idea who owns the rights to Eagle-Lion films. I can’t imagine that we’ll be seeing this one on DVD anytime soon. 🙁
I have a dvd that contains 3 of Anthony Mann’s early films – “T Men”, “Raw Deal”, and “He Walked By Night” (the latter title an uncredited co-direct) – all made for Eagle Lion. It was issued by the Roan Archival Group, and the sound quality is subpar. TCM airs a very good print of “He Walked” frequently, and about 4, 5 years ago, ran “T Men” and “Raw Deal” a couple of times. Both were excellent quality. I’m glad I set my dvr when those films were screened, since they haven’t reappeared on TCM’s schedule since. I watch them over the dvd versions.
I’m afraid that too many of Ann’s films that she made for the non majors will remain hard to find. Rarely shown on tv, or not available on dvd. And if they do become available for purchase, substandard copies.
A belated thumbs up to the picture of Ann in her badminton outfit! Does anyone play badminton anymore? A favorite back yard game of my youth, though not quite on the level of whiffle ball.
I always wanted to play badminton, though I never did and fear it’s just not to be.
I am really hoping that her other two Columbia films, “Girls of the Road” and “Cafe Hostess” will be released under the Sony Classics program, though I fear I will be waiting a long time.
