This Day in Ann Dvorak History

Today marks the 30th anniversary of Ann Dvorak’s passing. The actress who had appeared in over fifty films, traveled the world, and risked her life contributing to the war effort in the UK, died in obscurity in Honolulu at the age of 68.
When I first became interested in Ann, over ten years ago, I was hard pressed to find others who had heard of her, let alone seen any of her films. While Ann is still unknown to many, as more and more of her movies become available on DVD, I have noticed a greater awareness of this amazing actress, which is encouraging. Ann was sensitive about her contributions to film being forgotten, and I think she would be pleased by the rediscovery of her talents, and appreciation of her pre-Code performances.
Take a break from the madness of the holidays today, pop on a Dvorak film, and pay tribute to this talented gal.
i’ve been a fan for at least a decade now. i honestly cant recall the first of her films i saw (probably saw several within a very short time frame), but i do know that i liked her right away. She’s a total natural and had such a marvelous face and figure and those eyes, omg! plus she did a lot of good work at my fave studio, Warner Bros, so all i can say is when it comes to Ann Dvorak, what’s NOT to like! one of my all-time faves of hers is that odd little picture “Heat Lightning”. i love those gritty little Warner B-films and Ann had such great people co-starring with her.

Heating Lightning is also one of my favorite Dvorak flicks. Looking forward to seeing what other early 30s WB gems the Warner Archive is going to make available. I also love the 3 Ann made at Columbia in 1939. Thanks again for the comment. Always great to hear other fans wax ecstatic about the grand and glorious Ann-D.

I was delighted to see how many fans this beautiful and talented actress has.
In The Flame Of The Barbary Coast.she sings. Love Here Is My Heart. I copied it from the film onto a CD. It still moves me everytime I hear it.

Thanks for checking out the site. Ann also sings “Because” in the film I Was an American Spy, which is equally, if not more moving. Keep an eye on TCM, they gave been playing quite a few of her film lately.
