“Racing Lady” on TCM

Racing Lady is going to air on Turner Classic Movies in about 6 hours on September 8, at 3:00am PST.

Well, I kind of dropped the ball on this one. If you happen to checking this site anytime between now and 3 in the morning on September 8th, AND are an Ann Dvorak completest, set your DVR for TCM.

If you don’t read this in time, I can’t say you’re missing much with Racing Lady, other than it’s one of the few time Ann was the title character. Otherwise, it’s rather dry, Smith Ballew is pretty stiff, and Ann never even rides a horse.

We’ve got some pre-Code goodies coming up very soon on TCM so stay tuned!

I disagree on your rating of the movie, well somewhat anyway. It’s a typical late 1930’s horsey story – and how they ever chose Smith Ballew as the male lead has to be a mystery. He would have been better suited to play a background extra in the crowd scenes I suspect! In fact, in my humble opinion, Willie Best adds more to the picture than Ballew.

While there isn’t much breath taking drama to the story I do appreciate Ann’s efforts to “liven” up the script with her enthusiastic acting style at various points. In short, Ann’s performance makes it well worth watching, I would add….

I know, call me “Corny”, call me “Stupid”, but call me a real “Ann Fan” (mmmh, sounds a phrase for a good bumper sticker).

While I like the scenes with Ann & Harry Carey, I am fine never seeing this one again!
