    Some post-viewing thoughts …

As you noted previously, Ann certainly makes the most of her limited screen time in this one; being both jaded and commiserative. And manages to look good throughout, even during the scenes in her seedy apartment.

Vincent P just a total slimeball. In an entertainingly hammy way.

How Sol Polito’s cinematography went unrecognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that year is a genuine mystery.

Lots of flashbacks within flashbacks. Lots of extras in almost every scene. And lots and lots of smoking! Henry’s character almost all the time. So much so that you almost felt like coughing from second-hand smoke.

The set design is also pretty great. I believe it was filmed completely on soundstages, using forced perspective for the long shots of the town.

You reminded me how much I miss smoking.
